Haiti’s crafts culture is vibrant, diverse and artistically rich. Through our crafts, we show the depth of creativity and ingenuity of Haitian men and women. Crafts also provide an important income in a country where work is scarce. The artisan sector is making a valuable contribution to the economic growth of many families and communities.
Comité Artisanal Haitïen works with over 200 artisans located throughout Haiti (see map). The artisans represent a variety of craft traditions, like stone carving, metal sculptures, paper maché, horn and bone, basketry and natural fiber weaving, among others. With a minimum of five people in an average Haitian household, over 1000 people benefit indirectly from CAH’s work. Seasonal helpers and apprentices result in an additional 800 people whose lives are improved by CAH.
Our work with artisans ranges from product evaluation, through quality control, to marketing locally and internationally with our partners. Remaining committed to our mission to develop artisan crafts and trade, CAH trains artisans in small business management and basic education - including literacy programs. These services not only benefit artisans financially, but also provide them with exposure and professional skills.
Artisans are usually referred to CAH by other artisans or members. Artisans coming to CAH for the first time must provide more details about themselves or their group to assure that they conform to thee Fair trade model. Criteria for membership include the creativity and workmanship of the products they produce and strong references. We strive to foster creativity and originality from artisans. We also encourage the use of raw materials available locally that do not add to the prevalent environmental degradation in Haiti.
In strengthening artisan development, CAH champions values of experience, reliability, fairness, and transparency. Follow the links below to learn more about the various art forms that Haitian artists practice within the CAH community.
